School and language in the construction of the Uruguayan national identity: the reading books used in the elementary school in the 40’s in the 20th century

Abstract

Abadie and Zarrilli’s books belong to the 40’s in the 20th century. This period relates to the consolidation of citizenship. The purpose of this research is to study the sociolinguistic representations in Abadie-Zarrilli’s reading books, as well as the documents about education related to them.Collected data is considered according to the periods stated establishing the socio-historical and educational contexts. I study the relationship between language, nation and citizenship. School and language have played an important role in the construction of the national identity.
